Ghost Hunters at Cashtown Inn

This is an observation on last night's episode of Ghost Hunters where TAPS investigated the Cashtown Inn near Gettysburg, PA.

At the beginning of the episode Steve was setting up the infrared camera and the TV suddenly turned on. He was puzzled and eventually unplugged the TV since it went on and off while he was standing there with the camera. Later Tango experienced the same thing after plugging it back in. He was astute enough to think the IR camera might be the cause since the TV remote is IR as well. However, he assumed that since the camera was pointed away from the TV and the beam did not reflect it could not be the cause. That was an error that I'm sure Jay and Grant kept from going further since they did not mention it to the owner.

Tango should have first realized that direction did not matter. Taking even your TV remote and pointing it away from the TV, you will find it still operates normally. I did a quick experiment during the show and pointed my remote not only away from the TV but at a pillow to make sure it did not reflect back. The remote still worked the TV. Likewise the IR camera puts out much more IR energy than a little remote so it surely could cause problems with the TV. Even with that, he could have tried to eliminate the camera as the source by unplugging it and seeing if the phenomena repeated. If it did then the camera obviously was not the cause and further investigation would have been indicated.

Gladly, Grant and Jason did not accept this as any sort of evidence and I'm sure realized what was going on.

Now, for my usual criticism of "provoking". In this episode I found that technique particularly noisome. The reason for that is one of my ancestors died in the first day of fighting at Gettysburg. If that site was used as a field hospital it is possible he was there if he didn't die immediately of his wounds. For that reason I found their taunts in very poor taste. The ghost they were hearing could well have been my Great-Great-Great Uncle who owned no slaves and fought because the state he loved asked him to do so. Perhaps, if we remember the slogan that TAPS used to have on the wall of their office we would understand that "provoking" is unnecessary and mean at times. "Ghosts were people too."

Why Is Paranormal Research So Christo-Centric?

I recently saw the pilot episode of Ghost Hunters again. It'd been quite awhile since that first taste of the guys and I'd really pretty much forgotten it. But this time I was struck by their "Demonologist" who shows up at the end of the episode doing a blessing/exorcism of a house.

Now, the medical person with a few psych classes knows that people will often respond to religious ideals when they won't respond to common sense. So, working within their system often accomplishes more than trying to explain other ways of looking at a problem - or I should say accomplishes more quickly.

But I keep butting up against the Christocentric ideas around every corner. Demons and "unclean spirits" and "unholy entities" and all the rest. Since my belief system does not encompass "demons" must I incorporate the Christian idea into my thinking in order to study the paranormal? Why is it assumed that these so-called "Demonologist" have the first idea of what they're talking about and their word accepted fairly at face value?

I suppose my concern is that accepting the labels of "demon", "unholy" and such imply a core religious belief that is at its base not a scientific or objective approach to the study of the paranormal. Whose to say what the "demon" these people uncover or think they uncover really is. In my belief system there is such a thing as a "thought form". These are simply undirected or misdirected energies - usually negative. Most often they're benign but sometimes given stress or negative emotion can become quite distinct and powerful. However, they're not considered "demons" and are usually cleared with simply application of positive energy or light work. Maybe we're simply describing the same thing but Christians are not eager to admit their outlook and emotions may harbor the roots of negative energy about them.

But, to be truly objective and scientific it would behoove investigators to lay the Demonologists aside as many have laid aside the parlor psychic with seances and table rapping. Until we have proved there is more here than meets the eye we have absolutely no way of knowing what it truly is in the universal view.

Mile High Inn - Jerome, AZ

Cursory investigation of the Mile High Inn located at 309 Main Street in Jerome, Arizona by Buck Bannister and Michael Koch the night of March 23, 2008.

We arrived at approximately 5pm to check into our room. At check in we met one of the owners of the Inn and Grill, Liz. We had reserved the Lariat and Lace room located on the second floor (all rooms are on the second story). Reports of events at the Inn included the spirit of a cat that often would sit on the beds, strange sounds, mists, and the doors on an old armoire in the Lariat and Lace room that would detach from the cabinet and fall to the floor.

Upon arriving at our room we noted a great deal of vibration coming from the motor of the grill fan below in the restaurant. This vibration was very pronounced and could easily be the cause of reports of doors opening. However, the vibrations ceased around 9:30pm when the grill closed.

After storing our luggage we decided to check out some of the other sites in Jerome before eating dinner at the Grill.

After dinner we returned to our room where we set up a mini-DV camera to photograph the armoire and I went into the hall to shoot pictures with the digital camera. Photographs revealed nothing out of the ordinary. We were prepared to try to capture EVP, however it became apparent that we could hear other guests in rooms nearby as well as people walking up and down a stairway/walkway about 40 yards from our room window. Therefore, because of the probability of contamination we decided to forgo EVP work.

Michael walked out on the back deck and I joined him. At one point I returned to the room to find the window vibrating and the latch on the window open. I closed it and stopped the vibration and noise and asked Michael if he had loosened the latch or noticed that it was open when he looked at the window on arrival. He indicated that he did not notice the lock position but the window was definitely not rattling. Unfortunately, the vibrations from the restaurant could account for the latch opening and the window vibrating in its tracks.

The mini-DV showed nothing out of the ordinary and the only other anomaly we noticed was a glow or aura effect that appeared around the edges of the cabinet. It was not distinct and we could not capture it with the camera. The most probable explanation is that it simply was a reflection of soft light from the single lamp against the light wall.

The night passed peacefully with no phenomena present. The only area of the Inn that had any "feeling" was the front staircase which I mentioned to Michael upon arrival. There was a feeling of something standing near the top of the stairs. However, it was not definite and certainly not malevolent in any way.

The next morning we breakfasted at the Grill and had an opportunity to interview some of the staff about activity in the Inn and also around town. One of the staff members mentioned that a recent guest reported that her door opened and closed during the night. The staff member thought it might have been another member of her group playing a joke but the guest insisted her deadbolt was locked when it happened.

This same employee also mentioned a recent guest who insisted that an old door knob which is frozen in place was spinning on its own. This occurred near the top of the stairs at the door leading into the main hallway.

Another story involved an employee who stepped into the adjacent alleyway to smoke a cigarette. She said she felt as though someone was standing right next to her but no one was present. She said that just after that a shadow passed very near her face and scared her greatly. We checked out the alleyway and noticed there were air-conditioning units and electrical boxes present. We did not have an EMF meter to check for possible spikes that might have caused her feeling of being watched and the shadow effect. We should also note that the person reporting this has long curly hair which she wears down and near her eyes. Although she insisted it was not simply catching her own hair out of the corner of her eye, it could be an explanation.

We did check the museum and Historical Society displays while in town and noticed that there was a fatal shooting in front of what is now the Inn. According to the display a man was trying to purchase firearms in the Hardware store (now the Grill). Upon leaving with the weapons the Sheriff stopped him and he opened fire. The Sheriff returned fire and killed the man in the street in front of the store.

Certainly we caught nothing and had no experiences to indicate the Mile High Inn and Grill is haunted. However, the frequency and number of reports of events would indicate further study and investigation would be in order.

Local Hauntings

Thanks to the forums at Sonoran Paranormal Investigators I'm beginning to get some ideas about local hauntings. There are a few I'd like to check out sometime. We just bought a new digital camera yesterday. It's a Canon Powershot with 8 megapixel resolution. A very nice camera for the money (under $200).

I tried out the new camera last night and was pleased with the clarity of pictures I got. I even shot a few with the lights off in low light to see how it reacted. It still focused fine and the flash was bright enough to illuminate the objects across the room.

So, with camera in hand (and maybe a recorder), I'm thinking of heading to some sites soon. First will probably be the Fremont house. It's a historic home run by the Arizona Historical Society. There are supposed to be quite a few active areas and one ghost hunting team (not SPI) claims to have caught an apparition on film in the front hall.

I would like to check out the Santa Rita hotel after learning about some activity there and the personal experience of one person on the forum at SPI. However, it is currently closed for renovation. It was strange that we passed it yesterday and without knowing of its history then I noted it and thought I'd like to go there sometime to see the building.

Tombstone and the Bird Cage Theater are definitely on my list but not sure when I'll get over that way. The week we're headed up to Prescott Valley and I may try to entice Michael into making a run to Jerome that has quite a reputation for haunted places. We'll see how that pans out.

Cigarette Smells on Ghost Hunters

So, I'm watching Ghost Hunters Wednesday night and they were at the historic prison. Grant and Jason noticed the cigarette smell (which had been mentioned by the guide).

They assumed there was no smoking for a long time inside the building. That's probably correct, but they didn't check out fabrics for lingering smells and more importantly... didn't check the air exchange system to see if there was an intake near a "designated" smoking area or a place that employees or visitors use without permission outside to smoke.

I used to work in a "non-smoking" building that had a smoking area outside. In the afternoons we would notice a smoky smell while at our desks. We finally realized that the people were smoking near an air intake and that the ashtrays (big pots with dirt) were right next to them. So when the air or heat kicked on it pulled that strong smoke smell right into the building and wafted it around with the airflow.I think I would have checked out smoking areas and the A/C or Heat systems with the folks at the prison to try to debunk that before counting it as an experience.

Yeah, I know it "moved" but that could also be airflow and it could also be just subjective.Just my two cents on the cigarettes.

Too bad they didn't get a better look at whatever was in the hallway. Of course, as some of my new friends at S.P.I. pointed out they could have investigated the smells off camera. That is true, but it would have been nice to have it mentioned but I'm sure they don't have much say in the final cut for broadcast and I'm sure Sci-Fi wants to make it as dramatic as possible. So, even their disclaimer may have been left out of the final edit as well.
