According to Schwartz he has come to the realization that there is an overall organizing principle to the Universe that is manifest within each of us and that is accessible to all.

He came to this idea, he says, after working with a psychic named Christopher Robinson who could accurately, it seems, predict random locations throughout Southern Arizona despite the fact he was in Great Britain. Schwartz also experimented by taking the grains of sand from a sand painting and placing them in a jar and shaking them up to attempt to recreate the sand painting randomly. The fact that he was unable to recreate the sand painting he says led him to believe that there is an underlying organizing principle to the Universe that guides, orders and designs it.

If his first idea sounds somewhat familiar: that we all share a connection to some larger font of knowledge that we could draw on at any time, it should. Carl Jung described a similar idea when he spoke of the "Collective Unconscious" which is the repository of all the various bits of information that we carry with us throughout human history. With each passing year the line between true scientific inquiry and new age mumbo jumbo becomes harder and harder to discern. Dr. Schwartz, Harvard and Yale trained and working at the University of Arizona now, gives academic weight to this blurring of lines when they seem to leave hard science behind and become "true believers" creating what amounts to new religions in the process.

With much reticence after reading the almost universal panning of his work, I will probably pick it up and read it for myself to see if my initial impression is accurate. Yet, it's a process I'm not particularly looking forward to as pop-spirituality books invariably leave me feeling empty and and depressed.

The Gnostics had/have some incredible ideas to explain how the universe in all its glory works, many of which it seems folks like Deepak Chopra and Dr. Schwartz draw upon in their works without, usually giving much credit. With the same zeal as the most ardent fundamentalist each is sure they have this infinitely complex system figured out. Read my book, believe my ideas and you too shall have the keys to the Kingdom. Shockingly familiar to those of us who grew up in areas predominated by Fundamentalist Christian sects.

Perhaps, like most things in the West, this comes down to economics. A popular New Age book can bring an author security and people seem to want to have a very simple answer to very complex questions. For those who have been damaged by traditional religion, they seek to substitute something as simple but without the moralistic and militaristic trappings. They turn to these works which offer up oversimplified ideas and promise to have the answers in a concise and easily digested form.

As I spoke to my friend about this I asked him to consider just how vast everything was. We have competing ideas of multiple dimensions and then we have traditionalists who give us our Victorian idea of ghosts being the souls of the dead. Each day new and interesting ideas are espoused, often contradictory when viewed together.

Just the sheer magnitude of the Universe is astounding. As we chatted I asked him to consider an atom. Atoms are made up of smaller and smaller bits. Each passing year more and more discoveries are made as to what makes up a single atom and how it works. Yet, atoms make up molecules which in turn make up cells, which in turn make up human beings or other creatures. Atoms and molecules make up what we percieve as "reality" yet, within an atom we could think of entire universes existing. Does an atom know it's a molecule? Does a molecule know it's a cell? Does a cell know it's a brain?

Beyond that, what makes us individuals? Is it our experience and memory? If a brain were transplanted successfully would it carry with it all the experiences and memories of the donor? Would the recipient then be the donor instead of the recipient although their individual cells remained distinct? Would the donor brain somehow inherit a new sense of self?

There are those who claim that any transplanted organ can carry with it a "cellular memory" of the donor and provide the recipient with knowledge they could not otherwise have. Yet, I have had a transplant and have yet to experience this effect to any degree. If that holds true, why would anyone receiving a blood transfusion not suddenly have some psychic awakening to the donor?

The questions are complicated and vast. It is this wonder and complexity that thrills me. Unlike Schwartz and others I don't expect a simple answer to a complex question. I don't expect to find that this whole infinitely complex system was created by a guy sitting on a cloud somewhere who put it in motion and then stepped back to watch it unfold.

That idea isn't even new. The concept of the "Watchmaker God" dates back to the 17th Century and Descartes. It's now gaining popularity amongst the "Intelligent Design" community again as they seek to find a bridge between a complex universe unfolding through science and traditional theology which requires a single creator. It is into this discussion that Scwartz has stepped with his work.

As my friend said though, if what these folks believe is true: Who created the watchmaker? And there is the paradox.

To me the beauty is in the journey not the destination.
